Cape Meares Lighthouse

Happy Holidays 2001

This is an interesting combination of traditional and digital media. I took a digital photo of the lighthouse last summer while visiting the Oregon coast. Take a look a the full frame version.

I first resized and cropped the photo in Photoshop Elements (down to 5 1/4 x 3 5/8 inches) and then using my Wacom Graphire tablet and pen I traced the major shapes in a new layer using the Clone tool.

Then I printed the sketch to watercolor paper and handcolored it using traditional watercolors and brushes. After drying the watercolor with a hairdryer I scanned it on my flatbed scanner. I then retouched the image in Photoshop Elements and adjusted the contrast and color until it printed well on my Epson inkjet printer.

Finally, I printed the finished image on Strathmore Imperial Watercolor 140 lb. Cold Press Post Card paper. I was very pleased with the end result. The print retains the fresh, lively look of the original watercolor.

Here is a large jpeg version (244K) of the finished image suitable for printing.

And here is a large jpeg version (158K) of the sketch in case you want to do your own watercolor.

To print these images, open them in your favorite image editor and change the resolution from 72 ppi to 300 ppi without resampling. This will bring the print dimensions down to 5 1/4 x 3 5/8 inches.
